Armoury

The ArmouryThe armoury is in the oldest surviving part of the castle, the mid 12th century keep. Originally used as a chapel the armoury entrance was cut through from the passage in modern times.

The most impressive item of armour in the armoury is the Nuremberg suit, made in Germany in the late 16th century. The pikes halberds and muskets around the walls date from the early 19th century and were for use by the local militia should there have been an invasion during the Napoleonic war.

A number of crossbows and early firearms are on display here, representing projectile weapons from a crossbow of circa 1450 to a German 17th century wheellock and early matchlocks.
