| 'The
Northumberland coastline boasts some magnificent scenic golf courses
- but the jewel in the crown must be Bamburgh Castle' - you may well
think that this is the comment of a PR man or a biased Bamburgh member,
but it is in fact that of respected golf writer Duncan Madsen in an
article written for the Newcastle Evening Chronicle in July 2001.
It would be wrong to suggest however that Bamburgh's only attribute is in being a beautiful location to play golf- nothing could be further from the truth as it is also a fine test to all standard of player. Whilst it's scenic splendor has much to do with it's elevated position overlooking Bamburgh village, the Castle and Fame Islands to the south and Holy Island to the north, the terrain has also very much dictated the lay out of the course, an example being it's unique start of 2 par 3's, followed by 2 par 5's. Whilst there are records of golf being played on land close to Bamburgh Castle in 1896, the course on the present site was first laid out in 1904 (a plan of that lay out is displayed in the clubhouse) and whilst subsequent revisions have taken place, much of what you see today, including the clubhouse is as it was a century ago. |
