The Elswick Works

In 1847 Armstrong set up his first engineering works at Elswick.

bridgeHis factory made 100 cranes a year for the rest of the century, employed 3,800 workers at its peak and expanded into bridge building. Armstrong's hydraulics powered the original lifting mechanism of the great Tower Bridge in London and closer to home, the swing bridge crossing the Tyne linking Newcastle and Gateshead.
