The walls at the base of the keep are three to four meters thick. The picture shows the top of the Saxon well as it is known. It is in half the bottom of the keep that was probably a guard room, the other half is behind a substantial cross wall. The idea being that if one half of the keep were taken then defence could be carried on from the second half.
The huge chains that hang around the walls were used by Dr Sharp for the resue and salvage of ships wrecked on the coast.
A staircase beside the well leads down to the domestic rooms of the castle.
