St Oswald's Gate

St Oswald’s Gate is believed to have existed since at least the 8th century and is thought to have been the original and only entrance to the castle for many years. It is believed that is was protected by a barbican and drawbridge and would have given access to a natural harbour beyond.

St Oswald's GateArchaeological excavations have uncovered stonework from two very early buildings believed to be the castle's fortified gatehouse and royal officials would have controlled access from here.
