The windmill was built in the 18th century by Dr Sharp. Times were hard and the price of grain was high. Dr Sharp persuaded his fellow Lord Crew Trustees to bulk buy corn, which was stored in the castle, ground by the windmill then sold at reasonable rates to local people from a poor shop in the East Ward which also sold household essentials such as soap and candles.

Bamburgh Castle WindmillThe windmill is built on what may have been the site of an earlier tower which would have overlooked St Oswald’s Gate.
