Join us on select dates for Redcoats and Pirates weekend, and experience authentic life as a member of the Georgian Military, or alternatively, shiver yer boots with our pirate heaven.

Step into 1770s as Bamburgh Castle transforms into a Georgian military encampment and pirate haven! During this immersive weekend, your family will journey through history by engaging all five senses — it all begins with the thunderous boom of muskets echoing across the battlefield, then unfolds into the lingering aroma of black powder that drifts gently through the air, painting a vivid picture of the past.

 

What is Redcoats and Pirates Weekend? –

The Redcoat Experience:

Live like a soldier – Try on authentic uniforms, learn drill commands, and feel the weight of a Brown Bess musket

Camp life unveiled– Smell the woodsmoke from field kitchens and the earthy tang of leather equipment

Hear history– The rattle of cartridges, drum calls for muster, and the shouted orders of sergeants

True stories– Discover how soldiers lived on just 1lb of bread and 1oz of cheese per day!

“Surgeon’s Corner” – Witness (fake!) amputations with period tools – not for squeamish!

Trade and Commerce – discover how global trade shaped this turbulent period.

Family Activities:

Children’s Drill- Earn an official “Best Recruit” certificate

Twice-daily firing displays – the smell of the black powder.

  • Please note that, throughout the day, musket firing will take place in the West Ward. Consequently, if you are visiting with young children, individuals who are sensitive to loud noises, or four-legged companions, we kindly ask that you remain mindful of this activity and plan your visit accordingly.
